Monopoly being played by 31% winners does not prove it is stronger than any other development card. Just from the data presented we can't even know if monopoly is above average. People who have monopoly are more likely to have knights, roadbuilding, YoP and VP. (players with high production or OWS have more of all of the development cards) Therefore it is possible that monopoly is the weakest development card and players who got it won just because they also got the other development cards. Monopoly might not be better than a knight as far as we know, but it sure is better than having low production and getting nothing at all. Instead of focusing on the number of monopolies, you should calculate how many percentages of cards they got were monopolies.

Tried the hybrid OWS strategy today and went 2-0 with it - thanks for the idea and information! First game was a fairly straightforward win with quick upgrades of the starting two settlements to cities, followed by gradual points accumulation primarily through development cards - second game we were pretty wheat starved for the whole game, so it was a much slower build, where my infrastructure was terrible throughout (sat on starting two settlements for ages) but ultimately got the win with a city after a very lengthy game that finished 10-9-9 (for an idea of the length, I had played 8 knight cards by this point). Edit: while I'm an absolute noob to the strategy, I feel like in a vacuum full-OWS is going to be better on some board layouts, and hybrid is going to be better on others (usually it'd be determined by port positions). And of course, switching to another strategy is going to be better if you're playing with other people going for full or hybrid OWS.

Largely strategy, but a significant amount of luck The way to tell is that the same people win the tournaments repeatedly.

I wish Catan would allow you to customize the amount of trades in the game.

I have fallen into OWS + a Sheep port if possible or if not wheat or ore port. You don't have direct access to wood or brick but you only need one of each for a road. You can get this by robbering other players you know probably have either, using year of plenty, knights, or monopoly. Can also trade with the bank easily once you get that port which you should aim to get with your third settlement. 3 cities + largest army + 2 DV cards or longest road if you get road building card. You will often get a lot of knights and thereby keep the robber off you almost the whole game while also choosing to place it on whomever you want.

Thanks for this! I wish you showed the percentage of people using a certain strategy who win, instead of showing the percent of winners who use certain strategies. This way, we don’t know how successful they are, because it could just be that more people used those strategies (see the OWS with lots of ore, for example)

I am a bit disappointed because it had so much potential and your previous was great but as a data scientist I thin it is really hard to get many takeaways from thia becuase the data contains just the winning player view and positioning. If you would include also data entries of people that lost and how much points they got plus maybe a date it would be wonderful and make a huge difference in my opinion

Great presentation. The problem with analyses such as these is they focus too much on a single data point. For example, of the percentage that won with road we can't really comment on whether pursuing road is an effective "strategy" without knowing how it was won. If it was taken by building a fifth continuous road on the final turn of the game, by playing a road builder, by using a mono or year of plenty may suggest different things to us. I admire your attempts to bring some sort of data to the table when it comes to understanding Catan strategies but really until we have some sort of portable notation for games similar to chess and the software to analyse that it's impossible to interpret the data in a meaningful manner.

I've only played a few Catan games but I teach data analysis at uni and this is such a beautiful presentation, the effort you put in is really fantastic!

Ive seen lots of players come back from losing city at the start. No resources used for knights and focus on expanding quickly. And usually get ignored
